National Library Week

Communities matter @ your library: celebrate National Library Week April 14-20

April 14 – 20, 2013, our library joins other public libraries, libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers. 

Libraries today are more than repositories for books and other resources. Often the heart of their communities, campuses or schools, libraries are deeply committed to the places where their patrons live, work and study.  Libraries are trusted places where everyone in the community can gather to reconnect and reengage with each other to enrich and shape the community and address local issues.

Librarians work with elected officials, small business owners, students and the public at large to discover what their communities needs are and meet them.  Whether through offering e-books and technology classes, programs for job seekers or those to support early literacy, librarians listen to the community they serve, and they respond.  Service to the community is the focus of the library, and libraries continue to grow and evolve in the many ways they provide for the needs of every member of their community.

The Friends of Chesterfield County Libraries will be hosting a book sale on April 6, from 10:00 until 2:00 at Matheson Library.  In an effort to promote membership in the group, anyone that joins between March 1 and April 5 is invited to a “Preview Sale” on Friday, April 5 between 4:00 and 5:00pm.  Please consider making your annual membership pledge to the Friends of Chesterfield County Libraries.

Summer Reading, Had Me A Blast!

This week we do our final summer reading party at each of our five branches to close out the Dream Big–READ! summer reading event.   This summer’s highlight was our visit from Cocky’s Reading Express.  Thanks to all who attended and made it a success!

The children’s program was filled with exciting events each week including a pretend camp fire, crafty activities such as the paper plate dream catcher, night lights with flash lights, community helper visits, a ventriloquist, snakes, Hispanic story hour, and many other activities.  One other highlight this summer was the inclusion of a bilingual story hour.  Katie Rivers, summer intern, offered Spanish/English song, story and dance to children in the Pageland, McBee and Jefferson libraries.  Some children came just to “learn” Spanish!

The adults joined in this year and enjoyed a variety of craft activities from painting gourd bird houses, making memory wire bracelets, watching movies, learning kumihimo and learning a little line dancing.  Grand prizes were given away this week and everyone was a winner.  At the Chesterfield Branch,  Myrtis Burr stated that, “after showing the movie One For the Money to ten regular participants, they enjoyed “sweet” tea, popcorn, lemon cookies, and the patrons even added to the festivities with their homemade cookies and a homemade apple pie. “ 

Matheson's Summer Wrap up for the Adults was a big success.  They celebrated with an ice cream social, movie, door prizes, and the grand prize drawing.  According to Beverly Allen, branch manager, “15 women attended...many had attended all of the summer movies...and worked their bingo cards vigorously.  The patron that won the grand prize was Martha Bentley.  It was her first time to attend our summer program.  She was surprised and overjoyed that she won such a large basket of goodies.  Gloria Motley won the door prize...a framed/matted picture of the palmetto tree...very nice!  She was elated. Everyone loved that we served them ice cream and cookies while they enjoyed the movie.  They all expressed an interest in continuing the movies in the fall.  They loved the big screen projection that we are able to provide.  It's just like being in a theatre. “   Their movie event will start again in September.

At McBee, April Greene reported, “ We had a lot of fun this summer.  We enjoyed crafts, community helpers, snakes, ghost stories and more! We truly enjoyed having the community helpers and snakes in the library, but the most memorable event was during ghost story hour.  We toured the museum, with the lights off, opened one of the doors to a closet that housed a mannequin, which scared the kids so much they screamed like crazy from the museum back to their meeting room!  The adults enjoyed movies and crafts at the library this summer, plus the fun of playing Bingo! The group that came for the movie was very thankful the library hosted the event.  They gave a donation at the end for gratitude.  Another group painted gourd bird houses.  This was fun for all! We were able to get our creative juices flowing and paint some very beautiful pieces.”

Jefferson was  where all the major action took place with each children’s program averaging on the plus side of 60 kids.  Wow!  April Greene expressed her enthusiasm on the success of the summer reading adventure, “Oh boy did we have fun this summer! We kicked-off with the ventriloquist, Steve Brogan, which was a big hit.  We had Cold Blooded Encounters come for a visit and we had a blast! We had the community helpers come out and show us their cars and talk about what they do for a living, plus we were sprayed with water from the fire truck! In-between we were doing crafts, reading ghost stories and more! I don't know where to begin, everything was so memorable! I can't wait until next year!  For the adults, we offered movies and crafts, but our biggest hit was the gourd bird houses.  We had to have two separate sessions for the event it was such a hit!  The event left people wanting more!!!!”

August brings us a little vacation time and a chance to revamp our programs for the fall.  We are making a few staff changes so there will be some transition for us.  Phylis Mills, at the Pageland Branch, will be retiring as she begins another chapter in her life.  We wish Phylis the best of luck.  Matheson is knee deep in a digitizing project for the History Room with the help of a summer intern, Anna Boan.  Historic documents dating back to 1700’s have been placed on loan for us to capture and store digitally, along with many other historic documents of interest.  In addition to this, an overall organization of the entire History Room collection is in the works.

During August, most branches will be taking a bit of a breather but will offer a back-to-school family movie as they will begin to make exciting plans for the upcoming months.  In September, we will offer an e-newsletter and if you’d like to have it sent directly to your email, sign up at your local branch or email us at library@chesterfield.lib.sc.us.  We are exploring ways to fund mailing to patrons without email accounts, but for now, print copies may be picked up at each branch on the first of each month.

All libraries will be closed on September 3 for Labor Day and on September 19^th for a staff development day – planning ahead.

Out of the Stacks, Into the Oven

 Despite the rain on April 26, 2012, the Cheraw “taste of” event was a great success for Chesterfield County Library.  Our table focused on mouth-watering breads, freshly baked by students of our honored guest, internationally recognized, Chef Peter Reinhart, instructor at Johnson and Wales in Charlotte.  His breads were accompanied by a variety of cheeses, infused oils, vinegars, bruschetta and special French and Italian wines hosted by The Wine Factory.  This delectable pairing of breads and cheeses were a perfect complement to the other fabulous foods and culinary offerings by local chefs, while fostering a sense of community and supporting our local library. 

The highlight of the evening was the opportunity to meet and greet the community; old friends, new friends, former students, politicians and many, many library supporters while offering them bread and wine - a bit of literary communion.   Chef Peter shared his baking experiences, tips of the trade, and just plain “bread talk” with guests as they sampled the savory breads.  A favorite of a small table of Provence-like on-lookers, was Chef Peter’s fruit bread which seemed to disappear very quickly…hmmmm.  A former student, also a bread maker and owner of a much used copy of Chef Peter’s bread Bible, made a special trip to the Taste, just to meet the bread man!  We’re hoping he will continue the trade here in Cheraw – how wonderful would it be to have locally baked fresh breads?  We’re waiting and hoping to hear from you George!   If you sampled a favorite bread, we’d love to hear about it.  Chef Peter’s books are still available in the Matheson Library, along with a sampling of some of the remaining breads.  Please stop by and check them out.  Many thanks to Marilyn Burns, Joyce Hickey, the Cheraw Chamber, Gail Ingram-Library Board Chairperson and staff members Beverly Allen and Joyce Quick for their support in making this happen.

Looking ahead, you’ll want to check out the new Fifties Club in Chesterfield, bring ID – you could be carded if you’re aging well!  There will be a variety of events from BINGO, live music, guest presenters, craft classes, and we’re accepting suggestions from you – just see Jennifer.  Programs will be held at 2:00 pm on the third Wednesday of the month. The May 16th program features The Red Toppers which has proven to be a favorite group all over Chesterfield County.  Put on your dancing shoes and join us at the library!  Call for more details.

The Summer Reading Event is just around the corner and this year the library will offer an adult component.  Be sure to get involved because there will be lots of fun activities and opportunities for you to meet and share your literary and technological experiences with friends.  Each branch will feature different events so you may want to travel around a bit this summer and check out the different branch programs.  The Children’s Program will kick off the week of June 11^th so watch for detailed plans, arriving soon at each branch.

I leave you this month with a brief mentioning of a wonderful new read – Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake by Anna Quindlin, a memoir, exploring the life and lives of today’s woman.  She shares childhood memories, “maniac motherhood” experiences, and those wonderful mid-life “finding yourself” days.  You’ll see reflections of yourself among the pages as Quindlen points out the valuable wisdom we’ve acquired along the difficult and long road to becoming who we are today.   You’ll laugh, cry, reminisce and dream as you devour Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake.

National Library Week

Chesterfield County Library is celebrating National Library Week by offering a Technology Petting Zoo and E-reader training. Come by your branch next week to check out a variety of e-reader options or bring your own and a staff member will be on-site to help you learn how to use all the bells and whistles.

Whether you are a job seeker looking for resources to land a new job, a parent looking for free activities for children or a student searching for your next favorite book, you belong at your library.

Today’s libraries help level the playing field by making both print and digital information affordable, available and accessible to all people. Libraries provide cultural heritage and genealogical collections, materials in print and electronic formats, job seeking resources, English as second language and citizenship classes and many other creative and resourceful programs.

Libraries have historically served as our nation’s great equalizers of knowledge. The strength of libraries has always been the diversity of their collections and commitment to serving all people. This National Library Week, join our nation’s libraries and librarians by celebrating the place where we all belong.

Other new and special events being featured this month includes a Fifty Plus group which will begin meeting on the third Wednesday of each month. The first meeting will be on April 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. We will get to know each other over a game of Bingo. Light refreshments will be served.

The “Let’s Talk About It” Series will be hosted in McBee on April 26 at 5:30 p.m. The book being discussed this month is “Partisans and Redcoats” by Walter Edgar and the discussion will be facilitated by Frank White. All county residents are welcome. Call to register and pick up a copy of the book.

Author to Visit in Chesterfield

Local author Bea B. Todd will visit Chesterfield County Public Library this Saturday, March 10, at 2 p.m. to promote her book, “Appalachian Child: The Chronicles of an Abused Child and Her Journey to Survival.” The book will be available at Chesterfield Drug Store, Burry Book Store in Hartsville, and the library.

In her book, Bea also grows up dirt poor among the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in central West Virginia. There’s lots of work to do, and amenities such as indoor plumbing and central heating are nonexistent.

While others in Nicholas County had it tough, few had to suffer the type of abuse she did at home. Bea’s father runs his household like a dictator, and he’s never hesitant to abuse his daughter whenever she does anything not to his liking. Bea gets slapped, kicked, and beaten even at 5 years old.

While Bea’s spirit sometimes wavers as a result of being unable to please her father, her story is ultimately one of survival. By never giving up and trusting in God, she overcomes years of abuse, proving that fate and faith can lead to dreams that victims of abuse often think are unattainable.

“Become immersed in a story that defines the true meaning of determination as Bea recounts a journey that will inspire anyone who has ever suffered or felt like giving up in ‘Appalachian Child,’” encourages the publisher.

Bea shares her way of surviving the child abuse she endured and believes that anyone can make the decision not to be like the person that abused them. She knows from first-hand experience that you can pull yourself out of it and not let it influence your life in a negative way.

Bea B. Todd now lives in Shallotte, N.C., with Joe, her husband of 39 years. Bea is retired from federal service and is devoting her time to get her message of encouragement to those in need of hope.

Kids Are In At CCLS

Chesterfield County Library’s Children's Program will soon be offering afterschool events at each branch, in addition to their pre-school story time. A special program for ages 8 - 12 will be held weekly throughout the remainder of the winter months and evolve into our Summer Reading Program, come June. A different activity will be featured each week, such as seasonal craft activities, movies, games, or special interest group activities. A monthly “Teen Event” will held in each main branch on Mondays such as a movie, art contest, gaming tournament, etc. Contact the library by phone or check out our website for the exact dates and time in your branch. Looking ahead, we will sponsor an Adult Summer Reading Program along with our regular Children’s Summer Reading activities so clear your schedules.

Ms. Dorothy, has announced the schedule for February which includes: the movie, “Diary Of a Wimpy Kid,” a Valentine’s Craft Activity, Corn-hole tournament, the movie, “Gnomeo & Juliet,” and a Duct Tape craft activity. For teens, on Mondays between 3:30 and 5:00, a stimulating game of Corn Hole will be the main event. Each month will feature a different activity so be sure to visit our website for up-to-date information on a regular basis. Calendars are available at the Chesterfield library if you’d like to have one.

Other special events for adults include a “Bridge Club” which will meet on the second Wednesday of each month at 2:30 in Chesterfield. Come learn to play, bring your group, or team up with other experienced players. There will be no fee for this group – just come and have fun.

Our Brown Bag Lunch & Lecture series begins again in February, featuring Mrs. Felicia Fleming McCall, local author and researcher. We welcome you to bring a bag lunch and join us for a captivating experience with Mrs. McCall. Tea and coffee will be provided. At Matheson, on Feb. 23 at 11:30, author, Edward Patillo will be speaking – bring a brown bag lunch and rediscover the life of Southern pioneers and planters. Tea and coffee will be provided. More information about Mr. Patillo and his book will be provided in a separate article.

McBee and Jefferson branches will be hosting a Let’s Talk About It program, entitled “Carolina On My Mind” and funded in part by The Humanities Council. The program will begin on Feb. 23 at the McBee branch – books are provided free but please come by McBee or Jefferson to register and pick up your copy. The second movie vs. book program scheduled for February, features the movie “The Help.” Please join us at the branch of you choice.
